Synthetic Styling and Care
SYNTHETIC WIG CARE INSTRUCTIONS
If this is your first time wearing wigs – Welcome! Wigs can be a little daunting at first but once you get the hang of it there is so much fun to be had. Here are a few tips from The Wig and I to help ensure that your new synthetic wig stays as luscious and beautiful for as long as possible. At The Wig and I we only use the highest quality synthetic hair, so please follow our care instructions to get the best out of your new piece.
Use synthetic hair products only.
It is very important to only use synthetic shampoo and conditioning hair products recommended by one of our team or your hairdresser on our synthetic pieces as this will ensure your new wig stays soft, healthy and looking its best!
Keep me clean.
Between washes, carefully wipe down the lace front and inside the cap with a baby wipe to remove any excess oil build up coming from your scalp. For those who are using their piece daily, we strongly recommend you washing your piece every 2 weeks or every 6-8 wears and for more intermediate use, wash every 2-3 weeks. Follow The Wig and I, The Australian Wig Company and also Jon Renau on Instagram to see our hair care videos where we can show you how to wash your wig and provide the latest hair care tips.
Wash me like a professional.
Using your wide tooth comb, gently comb through the hair from the ends of your wig up to the top (not the other way around). This will get your wig free of tangles. Make sure you detangle the nape of the wig and the ends. Rinse the roots & ends in cool water. We recommend using cool water to retain the shape of your wig style. Apply approx 50c piece size of shampoo and work up a lather in your hands before applying it to the synthetic hair and then gently work the lather downwards in the direction of the hair. Do not rub the hair as this will cause tangles. It’s very important to take care of the lace when washing it. We recommend holding the lace and cap in your hand while washing. After rinsing the shampoo out, we recommend shampooing the hair once more so it’s really clean. After your final rinse gently towel dry your wig using a gentle dabbing motion until it’s damp. Again, do not rub the hair.
Then it’s time to condition. Be careful with conditioner! While your wig is damp use a synthetic fibre conditioner applying it only to the ends of the hair avoiding the top of the cap and the lace as conditioner on the lace may cause the knots to loosen and will shorten the lifespan of your wig. Use only synthetic hair products including Shampoo and spray on Conditioner. We recommend using Jon Renau products for Jon Renau synthetic hair but any brand is fine to use as long as it is for synthetic hair fibre.
NB: Please do not use anything from the supermarket or chemist as it must be recommended by a hairdresser or a member of The Wig and I.
Following the double shampoo and conditioning gently place your wig on a wig stand (with the hairnet over the stand to protect the cap and the lace). Place headstand on a towel on a table to catch the dripping hair. You can now gently comb your freshly washed wig focusing on the ends and working your way up the wig. If you have a wavy or curly styled wig use this time to recurl the hair fibres with your fingers in the direction of the curl so that it dries in the shape you want. Now you can leave your wig to air dry – generally overnight but depends on the season. Do not use a blowdryer to dry your wig.
Styling me at home like a professional.
If you are unable to take advantage of our in-store salon services, then make sure you are using the correct tools and heat protection products. We recommend using the Jon Renau detangling spray or Simply Stylin’ before wearing and at the end of the day to help maintain the health of the fibres.
If you’ve purchased a heat defiant wig you can use heat styling tools on your wig. Even though your wig can take heat of up to 150 degrees Celsius doesn’t mean you should start there. We recommend starting at a low 80 degrees Celsius and gradually increasing the heat if your wig needs it. If you are heat styling make sure you wash the hair first so it is hydrated prior to adding heat. It’s important to use a heat protectant on your hair before adding heat. For heat tools we recommend using a steamer or if you want to use heat tools we recommend Silver Bullet and H2O brands as they start at a very low temperatures (50-80 degrees Celsius) and you then you can gently increase the heat to the desired temperature but not going over 150 degrees Celsius. Go low and go slow. And refer to our website or Instagram for videos on how to do this.
Dealing with Frizz
From time to time and from wearing your wig your fibres can get a little frizzy and dry on the ends and the curls will soften. We offer an in-salon service of restoring your wig (on a case by case basis). If you don’t want to take advantage of our in salon maintenance service to restore your wig we recommend using heat tools on as low as 50 degrees Celsius on damp (almost dried) hair and using Simply Stylin’ to slowly restore your strands with a heat resistant fine tooth comb. Take note restoring curls isn’t easy so go low and go slow. You can also restyle your curls with Velcro rollers and a steamer. There is also a ceramic hot comb that you can use to defrizz your ends regularly. If you need any help in this area, please feel free to email us at info@thewigandi.com.au
Storage…how to keep your new wig or topper safe.
To ensure the longevity of your piece, we need to make sure your hair is safely stored for protection, after all doesn’t everyone want to live a little longer? Each client is provided with a box to store your new wig in when it isn’t being used. If you purchase a wig from us, you will also receive a pop-up wig stand for storage and you can also travel with it. Place your wig on the stand that has a hair net over the head stand to protect your wig (included in your box) of an evening or when you are not wearing it, to help keep the style and shape intact. Please make sure you place your wig OVER the stand so that the delicate lace isn’t going to come into contact with the stand to prevent damage to the delicate lace. If you aren’t going to wear your wig on a regular basis store it in the box.
Show it a little extra love when needed!
Every day use and friction from rubbing the fibres on your clothes will create frizz so please use a detangling spray and comb with a wide tooth comb before and after use. If you need us to give your piece a wash and deluxe wig treatment for a beautiful refresh we would love to help bring your hair back to life. At The Wig and I we offer a full range of Salon Services that you can book by either emailing us or booking on the website.
Irritation
Sometimes you may feel irritated or itchy from wearing your wig. We call it the wig itch. It can be tempting to scratch the piece if you feel an itch however, we advise using your fingers to tap at the irritated area, this will avoid repeated friction to the area, potentiality causing damage. If you can, it would be best to remove the piece to avoid scratching through the cap.
Sleeping and wigs
Sleeping in the hair can cause damage to the delicate hairs, we advise against doing this if it is possible for you. If you choose to sleep in your piece that is a very personal choice, and you just need to be mindful it will lessen the life of your wig.
Enjoy!
